Why Does the Million Dollar Body Challenge™ Work?
Almost 400 years ago, John Dryden spoke these words…
“We first form our habits, then our habits form us.”
About 250 years ago, Ben Franklin said…
“It is easier to prevent bad habits than to break them.”
Recently, Jimmy Carter was quoted as saying…
"The awareness that health is dependent upon habits that we control makes us the
first generation in history that to a large extent determines its own destiny."
We all know that if good health habits can be established early on in life, bad
habits do not get a foothold, and then can’t lead to compromised health later in
life.
The challenge, of course, is getting children interested in establishing habits
that they do not PERCEIVE as being necessary right now, or even particularly
interesting.
Want to immediately bore a child?
Talk about cholesterol. Tell them about
growing rates of heart disease and diabetes. Discuss the importance of avoiding
trans fats and getting enough anti-oxidants in their “diet”.
Want to take on a lost cause?
Try to get them to agree that TV is “bad” and
should be limited. Try to convince them that sugar is “gross”, or that peas and
asparagus are the nectars of the gods.
You didn’t buy it when your parents tried it, why should they?
Children are only interested in the moment. It’s not their fault, their brains
haven’t fully developed to allow them to look too far in the past or too far
into the
future.
Pursuing a plan that requires them to fear a future of ill-health and take
positive action today to prevent it is a waste of time. Unless, of course, you
want to ensure that your child grows up to be a neurotic adult, afraid of most
foods.
If you want them to look into the future, you better paint a bright and exciting
picture. And, if you want them to take actions today to get to that
“promised land”, you better make it fun and interesting TODAY.
Think Christmas and summer vacation. Not mortgages and taxes.
Be honest… how excited do YOU get about making healthy choices? And, you
are a lot closer to mortality than your child is.
The Million Dollar Body Challenge™
